I AWOKE TO the smell of brimstone.

Mr. Marlow was sitting up next to me, entirely and gloriously naked, fishing around on my bedside table. “Ah, hello, Magdalene,” he said. “Did Conrad bring my cigarettes in here?”

“I don’t think so,” I said.

He grunted and got up from the bed. I watched as he pranced across the room, taking in the swells of his muscled arse and the angles of his back. His long curly black hair hung free between his shoulder blades. “Right back, then,” he said.

When he reappeared, he had the cigarette lit and clenched between his teeth. It lit up his features red. He slunk back across the room and onto the bed.

“So?” he said. “If you’re married to him, you’re also married to me?”

“Am I?” I said, picking up his arm and putting it around my body. I tucked myself up against his chest. He was hot and firm and broad. I fit very nicely against him too, even though he wasn’t quite as tall as the doctor.

“Well, perhaps you should say some vows,” he said, hand worming down to tweak one of my nipples. “I, Magdalene, promise to show my teats to my husband whenever he wishes—”

I swatted his hands off. “No, I shall not vow that. I will not be put on display whenever you wish to humiliate me.”

“I thought it aroused you to be humiliated?”

I was aroused now, damn him.

“I, Magdalene, promise to get on my knees and take my husband’s thick, hard cock down my throat whenever it takes my fancy—”

“Jack.”

“What? I left that up to your discretion. You will suck me there from time to time, won’t you?”

“Why does he turn into you?” I said.

“Neither of us know that. Are you disappointed?”

“Well, he said he would take me to my mother tomorrow, and you can’t take me—”

“I shall make you come and bring him back, then, by dawn. How is that?” He smiled at me, indulgent.

I smiled back. “I’m not disappointed.”

“I didn’t think you were,” he said, his smile growing wider. He stubbed out what was left of the cigarette and scooted down in the bed, rolling onto his side.

I rolled onto my side, my head pillowed on his thick bicep.

We lay face to face, bodies lined up, smiling at each other.

“Never thought I’d have a wife,” he said. He touched my crooked nose.

“Never thought I’d have a husband,” I said. “Or two husbands as the case may be.”

He laughed, deep and low in his belly. “So, what do you vow, my ugly girl?”

“Are you always going to call me ugly?”

“Does it really bother you? I think it’s what makes you unique.”

“It’s not a very nice thing to say.” I reached out to brush at the hair on his chest, running my fingers through it.

“Nice? Is that what we are to each other?”

“Well, if we’re going to be married…”

“I’m not nice.” He was still touching my face. His voice was a velvet rumble that caressed all my sensitive places.

“No, I suppose not.”

He rubbed the pad of his thumb over my eyebrow.
